The Checklist of Austrian Bryophytes is a comprehensive, regularly updated inventory of all bryophytes recorded and taxonomically verified in Austria. For each accepted taxon, it provides scientific names, German common names, and selected synonyms. Taxonomy and nomenclature are based on 'Die Moosflora von Österreich: Band 1–3' (Berg et al., 2025). Synonyms were compiled from a range of published sources and are provided as a practical aid for name-based retrieval. They are intended to facilitate the use of historical literature and to support the location of herbarium specimens that may be filed under alternative names. This synonym list is not designed to resolve nomenclatural issues or to provide a comprehensive taxonomic treatment. Currently, the checklist comprises 1,106 species representing 1,156 taxa (species, subspecies, and varieties): mosses (Bryophyta) account for 846 species (887 taxa), liverworts (Marchantiophyta) for 256 species (265 taxa), and hornworts (Anthocerotophyta) for 4 species.
The compilation of this checklist and its publication on the web were supported by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Regions and Tourism within the framework of the programme LE 14–20.
The checklist is intended as a dynamic resource and is updated regularly. Validly published reports of taxa newly recorded for Austria are welcome and may be submitted through the contact address.
